Starting a web creation journey or building your own site does not require an expensive brand-new computer or high monthly software fees. If you enjoy creating websites as a hobby or small project, you can get started for very little money.
By combining secondhand hardware, lightweight open-source software, and a free website builder, you can launch a fully functional site without breaking the bank. Here is how I set up my entire workspace and domain for almost nothing.
To prove that expensive setups are unnecessary, I bought a used Lenovo ThinkPad T550 for around 1,300 DKK (approximately $194 USD).
While newer operating systems like Windows 11 often require heavy hardware specs, older ThinkPads remain incredibly sturdy and capable workhorses. Buying a secondhand laptop gives you access to high-quality build materials and keyboards at a fraction of the original price.
The ThinkPad was originally delivered with Windows 10, but I wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu Linux right away.
Ubuntu is lightweight, fast, and uses far fewer system resources than Windows. Because Linux handles background tasks efficiently, the laptop feels responsive and snappy. It provides a clean, secure, and stress-free environment that is perfect for web creation, writing, and everyday computer tasks.
To make the project official, I needed a custom web address. I bought my domain name, easytechsite.com, on Spaceship for about 60 DKK (around $9 USD).
I only purchased the domain name without any hosting plan, keeping the initial investment minimal while maintaining full control over my custom address.
For the website itself, I chose Google Sites. It offers several key advantages for budget-conscious creators:
100% Free to Use: There are no monthly subscription fees, web hosting costs, or premium plugins to pay for.
Generous Cloud Storage: Every standard Google account includes 15 GB of storage space across Google Drive, Docs, and media files.
Free Default Subdomain: You can build, test, and publish your website using Google Sites' own default domain completely free before connecting your custom address.
Zero Maintenance: Google handles server infrastructure, SSL security certificates, and system updates behind the scenes.
Beyond the financial savings, buying secondhand hardware provides a major environmental benefit. A significant portion of a computer's total lifetime carbon footprint occurs during the manufacturing and shipping phases.
By choosing a refurbished or used laptop like the ThinkPad T550, you:
Extend the functional lifespan of existing electronics.
Reduce electronic waste (e-waste).
Prevent the carbon emissions associated with manufacturing a brand-new device.
Older business laptops often have many years of reliable service left in them, making secondhand purchases a great choice for both your wallet and the planet.
